Ondo: FRSC urges public to report reckless drivers

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Shehu Mohammed, has called on road users across Nigeria to actively report reckless drivers to prevent highway accidents.

This appeal was conveyed through a letter read by Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, the Ondo State Sector Commander, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Akure as part of the 2024 “Ember Months” safety campaign.

Themed “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers,” the campaign emphasized the importance of passenger advocacy in preventing accidents.

Mr. Mohammed explained that the FRSC’s ongoing digitization efforts, including the new FRSC Mobile Application, empower commuters to report unsafe driving behavior directly, in line with the president’s agenda for economic growth.

“The timing of this meeting is critical as we upgrade our systems. All road users should now feel empowered to speak out against reckless driving,” Mohammed stated. He encouraged public cooperation and stakeholder support to make Nigerian roads safer.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, represented by Engr. John Ajayi, Director of Inland Waterways, praised the campaign’s impact, especially in the final months of each year when road incidents typically increase.

Aiyedatiwa urged drivers to prioritize safety and pledged continued support from the state government to reduce accidents.

Stakeholders voiced additional concerns, with Mr. Enikanoselu Migbowon, State Secretary of the Road Employer Association of Nigeria (RETAN), applauding the FRSC’s highway safety role and calling for government action against low-quality spare parts and poor road conditions. Mrs. Bosede Olanusi, State Coordinator of the Female Drivers Association of Nigeria (FEDAN), emphasized the need for improved driver education and discouraged reliance on unregulated driving schools to reduce crashes.

Representatives from the Nigeria Police Force, Fire Services, and the NSCDC were also present, reaffirming their commitment to road safety.
