Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed all police officers across Nigeria to wear black armbands for seven days in tribute to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.
Afripost reported that the presidency confirmed Lagbaja’s passing on Wednesday. He died at 56 after a prolonged illness. To honor him, the Federal Government ordered the national flag to be flown at half-mast.
In a statement on Thursday, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi conveyed that the black bands symbolize respect for Lagbaja, who was known for his courage and commitment in the fight against insurgency and violent crime.
The statement reads: “Following the passing of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has instructed officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to wear black bands throughout the seven-day mourning period. This directive is to pay tribute to the late General, who showed gallantry, dedication, and passion in combating violent crimes and insurgency in Nigeria. He was a respected leader who deserves to be honored in every way.”
