Gunmen Kidnap catholic priest in Imo

Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, the parish priest at St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish in Obollo, Isiala Mbano, Imo State, was reportedly kidnapped by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday evening.

According to church officials, the abduction took place near the Ayayi community in Obollo as he was returning from an official assignment.

The Catholic Diocese of Okigwe confirmed the incident, urging congregants to pray for his swift and safe release.

In a statement signed by the diocese’s Chancellor and Secretary, Very Rev. Fr. Princewill Iwuanyanwu, it was noted, “Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, who was ordained on September 27, 2014, and currently serves as the parish priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish in Obollo, was kidnapped around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, along the Aliyi community in Isiala Mbano LGA, Imo State.”

The statement added, “We earnestly request your prayers for his safety and well-being as we await his safe return and count on your support during this difficult time.”

David Ajaero, the councillor of Obollo Ward, confirmed Fr. Azubuike’s kidnapping and described him as a “kind-hearted man,” calling for his prompt release. Meanwhile, residents have taken to social media to advocate for the priest’s safe return.

In response, Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police, reported that a thorough investigation is underway. “The Commissioner of Police has deployed a special investigation team to work on the case, aiming to rescue the priest and capture those responsible,” Okoye stated.
