Ekiti students lashes Lawmakers over N250m Canada trip

Must read

The Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU) has criticized the Ekiti State House of Assembly (EKHA) for proposing a seven-day trip to Canada estimated to cost over N250 million.

Speaking at a press conference in Ado-Ekiti, FESSU President Benjamin Onileowo condemned the planned expenditure, calling it insensitive given the state’s economic challenges and the need for investment in essential sectors like education.

Marking the six-month milestone of his leadership, Onileowo raised concerns that the trip would cover expenses for 18 assembly members, five spouses, and four aides.

He argued that if the funds were redirected to the education sector, they could provide N50,000 bursaries for over 5,000 students across the state’s constituencies.

“Amid the ongoing economic hardships affecting all sectors, especially education, we view this proposed trip as ill-conceived,” said Onileowo.

“This is not the time for such an endeavor, especially when the state needs every stakeholder’s support to address urgent issues impacting the lives of ordinary citizens and the future of our education sector.”

Onileowo called on the lawmakers to reconsider, noting that the N250 million could be far better utilized to support thousands of students in need.
