President Bola Tinubu has nominated Saseyi Ibiyemi, a lawyer, as the new resident electoral commissioner for Ondo State, pending confirmation by the Senate.
Additionally, Tinubu has put forward Abdulrazak Tukur as a National Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), representing the North West region.
The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, in a statement titled “President Tinubu Nominates New REC, National Commissioner for INEC.”
If confirmed by the Senate, Ibiyemi will succeed ‘Niyi Ijalaye, who passed away in August while serving as the resident electoral commissioner in Ogun State.
Ibiyemi, 58, is originally from Ilaje in Ondo State and currently serves as the Administrative Secretary of INEC in Lagos State. She graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University in 1987 and was called to the bar in 1988. She also obtained a Master’s degree in Election Management from Bingham University in Nasarawa State.
Meanwhile, Tukur, 59, who has been nominated as the INEC National Commissioner for the North West, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bayero University, a postgraduate diploma in Economics from Bradford University, and a Master of Arts degree from Leeds University, both in England.
Tukur began his career at INEC in 1999 as an assistant chief administrative officer and advanced to the position of Director of Electoral Operations and Logistics, a role he held until December 2023. Like Ibiyemi, Tukur will also require Senate clearance for his nomination.
