Lagos driver, conductor set LASTMA official, patrol vehicle ablaze

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported a violent incident on Tuesday, where a commercial bus driver and his conductor assaulted a LASTMA officer while he was performing his duties.

Taofiq Adebayo, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at LASTMA, confirmed the event in a statement to the press. He explained, “LASTMA is aware of a troubling video showing the driver of a Volkswagen T4 commercial bus, with license plate LSD 355 CK, setting both his vehicle and a LASTMA officer on fire in a desperate attempt to evade arrest.”

The incident occurred on November 5, when the driver was intercepted by LASTMA officials for violating traffic rules in the Cele inward Mile 2 area. In response, the driver and his conductor reacted aggressively, pouring petrol on the LASTMA officer and resorting to physical attacks against the officers present.

“The injured LASTMA officer, who suffered serious burns, was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care,” Adebayo added.

He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to maintaining order and promoting road safety in Lagos, in line with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. Adebayo urged all drivers to adhere to traffic rules and respect LASTMA personnel, emphasizing, “LASTMA will not tolerate any form of violence or intimidation and will take strict action against those involved.”
