Kwankwaso criticizes N10 million bail for minors, urges focus on education

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has condemned the N10 million bail imposed on 67 minors allegedly involved in the #EndBadGovernance protest, calling it excessive and inappropriate.

The former Kano State governor expressed that these minors should be in school rather than in court, facing criminal charges. In a Facebook post, Kwankwaso voiced his dismay, describing the case as a violation of the children’s fundamental rights and a departure from basic principles of human rights and dignity.

“As leaders, we have a duty to protect our most vulnerable—children, women, the elderly, and the needy. It’s disturbing to see the government involved in such violations,” he wrote.

Kwankwaso also criticized the bail conditions as excessively harsh, stating, “It is shocking that a minor is expected to provide N10 million and secure a grade 15 civil servant as surety for bail.”

He further highlighted Section 11 of the Child’s Rights Act 2003, which upholds the dignity of every child and protects them from physical, mental, or emotional harm, abuse, neglect, or maltreatment, emphasizing the government’s duty to respect and uphold these protections.
