The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has released a statement on the recently arraigned 76 minors in court on charges that include terrorism, arson, and treasonable felony.
The suspects, according to the Nigeria Police, are accused of offences such as destroying public property and threatening national security, actions that the authorities believe undermine stability in Nigeria.
According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF handled the suspects’ detention and arraignment in strict compliance with legal requirements, aiming to ensure both fairness and accountability.
The statement emphasized that the Police have taken extensive measures to uphold the suspects’ rights throughout the process, including access to medical care and other essential provisions.
During their initial court appearance, the suspects were formally charged, after which the court issued a remand order to keep them in custody pending further legal proceedings.
Despite the serious charges, the NPF expressed a commitment to balance justice with compassion, noting that each suspect’s fundamental rights would be protected.
AFRIPOST had reported that an unexpected incident unfolded in court as six of the suspects reportedly rushed forward and fainted, attracting considerable media attention.
However, the NPF suggested the incident was a staged attempt to draw negative publicity, although medical assistance was swiftly provided to the individuals. This response, the NPF stated, reflects the Force’s commitment to the well-being of those in custody, irrespective of the charges against them.
The arraignment has sparked public interest and scrutiny, especially around the treatment of suspects and young individuals within Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
The NPF addressed these concerns, noting that Nigerian law mandates that individuals who have reached the age of criminal responsibility face consequences for their actions, even if they are young.
This approach is consistent with legal practices in other nations, such as the United Kingdom, where young individuals can be held accountable for serious offences. The NPF emphasized, however, that each case is assessed with empathy and in line with international human rights standards.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains sensitive to the rights of all individuals, including young persons,” ACP Adejobi stated. “We continue to uphold the rule of law while respecting human dignity throughout the judicial process.”
The NPF reassured the public of its officers’ professionalism in handling the case and urged Nigerians to follow developments with an unbiased perspective.
This high-profile case has brought attention to the NPF’s approach to managing serious allegations, highlighting a commitment to transparency and adherence to legal and human rights standards.
As the legal proceedings continue, the NPF has reiterated its dedication to best practices in law enforcement, affirming that all actions will be conducted transparently and with respect for due process.
