BREAKING: FG releases funds for NASU salaries, retirees’ benefits

The Federal Government has released funds to clear outstanding salaries owed to Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) members at federal universities and settle benefits for retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.

Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations in the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), announced on Saturday that payments to NASU members had begun, with many confirming receipt of funds.

The statement read, “The Federal Government has released funds for the payment of withheld salaries for the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities. It has also provided funds for benefits owed to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.”

The OAGF emphasized the Federal Government’s dedication to the welfare of workers and retirees in Nigeria.

Earlier this week, the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU launched an indefinite strike, protesting four months of withheld salaries, which has led to widespread disruptions across universities.

In an interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday, SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, confirmed that senior university officials, including vice-chancellors, bursars, and registrars, have also been without salaries for the same period.

He added that the universities would remain closed until full payments are made.
