Osun court orders remand of truck driver for alleged manslaughter

An Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court has ordered the detention of truck driver Adebayo Olayinka at the Ilesa Correctional Centre over the alleged manslaughter of Adebayo Tajudeen, reportedly caused by dangerous driving.

Chief Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara issued the remand order on Thursday, citing the “magnitude of the offence” as the basis for his decision. The magistrate rejected a bail application submitted by the defendant’s counsel, Oladipupo Olatunbosun, and adjourned the case until December 23 for further mention.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter and dangerous driving when the charges were presented to him.

According to the police prosecutor, ASP Akintunde Jacob, the incident occurred on October 19 at around 7:30 p.m. in the Old Garage area of Osogbo. He stated that the defendant was driving a Howo Sino truck, with registration number SGB 961 XY, in a reckless manner that resulted in Mr. Tajudeen’s death.

The prosecutor added that the charges against the defendant contravene sections 18 and 27 of the Road Traffic Laws (RTL), Vol. 11, Cap 146, and 548 of the laws of Osun, 2002.
