Olusola Oluokun, the chairman of Oyo East Local Government, has been suspended by the Oyo State House of Assembly in response to a widely shared video that caused a lot of controversy both online and offline.
Oluokun’s suspension was announced on Thursday following the presentation of a Matter of Urgent Public Importance headed “Urgent Call for Full Investigation into the Indecent Conduct of the Chairman, Oyo East Local Government” to the House.
The viral video showed Oluokun eating half-naked and thanking a political person who helped him climb to power while criticising people who were perceived as his benefactor’s rivals. His conduct was judged unacceptable for an elected local government officer.
The House has formed a committee to examine the occurrence, with the Vice Chairman temporarily taking over Oluokun’s duties.
Oyo Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin declared that the House will not allow such behaviour, emphasising that the fast response demonstrates the House’s commitment to protecting the dignity of public office.
