Horror as Ibadan building collapse kills 16

A building collapsed at Odugbede Street, Jegede Area of Olorunsogo, Ibadan, on Thursday morning, killing sixteen persons.

AFRIPOST gathered that ten persons were initially reported dead in the morning, but by the evening, the number had increased to sixteen.

Yemi Akinyinka, the general manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, stated its staff were sent to the location right away after receiving a distress call regarding the building’s collapse at around two in the morning.

“The Oyo State Fire Services Agency received a distress call at about 2 am, at Jegede Olunloyo area, Ibadan of which 10 persons have been recovered from the debris of the collapsed building, while seven persons were rescued alive,” he said.

Williams Funmilayo, the Commissioner for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, stressed the value of routine building inspections and upkeep during an assessment visit, especially during the rainy season.

To identify the reason for the collapse and stop it from happening again, he also gave his word that the Oyo State Government has begun its investigations.

He said, “We must prioritise safety and take proactive measures to prevent such tragedies. I urge all residents to inspect their homes and report any concerns to the relevant authorities.

“As the rainy season continues, residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Regular checks on buildings, secure storage of materials, and adherence to safety protocols can help prevent similar incidents,” he added.

SP Adewale Osifeso, the state police public relations officer, gave his assurance that sufficient security measures had been put in place to stop criminals from occupying the location of the incident.
