Health Workers suspend seven-day warning strike effective

The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professionals Association (AHPA) have announced the suspension of their seven-day warning strike, effective from midnight on October 31, in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Federal Government and in consideration of public interest.

This decision was confirmed by JOHESU’s National Chairman, Mr. Kabiru Minjibir, in a communiqué jointly signed by Mr. Martin Egbanubi, the union’s National Secretary, in Abuja on Thursday.

JOHESU initiated the strike on October 25, aiming to press for specific demands from the Federal Government.

However, the resolution to suspend the strike followed a hybrid emergency meeting of the Expanded National Executive Council (NEC) of JOHESU, which includes Presidents, General Secretaries, NEC members from affiliated unions, and JOHESU leaders at both state and branch levels.

According to the communiqué, the NEC-in-Session thoroughly reviewed the reports and the recent MoU established between JOHESU representatives and the Federal Government during a conciliation meeting held on October 29 at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

“After extensive discussions, the NEC-in-Session resolved to suspend the seven-day warning strike, effective from midnight on Thursday, October 31, 2024, in the spirit of the MoU and for the general public interest,” the communiqué stated. The union also set a six-week timeline for the Federal Government to fulfill all obligations outlined in the MoU.
