Court sends man to prison for calling Benue gov ‘chronic womaniser’

Paul Gyenger, 35, has been placed under detention at a Makurdi correctional facility on Wednesday by a Makurdi Chief Magistrate Court for reportedly calling the governor of Benue State a womaniser.

Gyenger was charged with using social media to disparage Governor Hyacinth Alia by calling him a “chronic womaniser.”

Gyenger, a Benue State native, was accused by the police of cyberstalking and defamation of character following a report made by ASP Ver Ingyatu, the governor’s Aide-de-Camp (ADC).

According to reports, the ADC said that Gyenger used harsh language in Tiv and made disparaging remarks about the governor while using a Facebook account under the name Terna Sunday Tyo. Gyenger also called the governor a “chronic womaniser.”

The prosecution’s attorney, Inspector Godwin Ato, attested at the case’s mention that the complaint was filed on October 16, 2024, at the Anti-cyber Crimes and Narcotics Unit in Makurdi.

Gyenger’s appeal was denied by Chief Magistrate Kelvin Mbanongun, who ordered his remand due to a lack of jurisdiction.

For additional procedures, the case has been postponed until December 17, 2024.
