Nigerian army dismisses claims of insurgents taking over military training camp in Niger State

Must read

The Nigerian Army has refuted recent reports suggesting that insurgents have taken control of a military training camp in Kontagora, Niger State.

Responding to concerns raised by Honourable Abdullahi Isah, who represents the Kontagora II Constituency in the Niger State House of Assembly, the Army clarified that these claims are unfounded and have stirred unnecessary anxiety within the communities of Kontagora, Mariga, and across Niger State.

In a statement issued on October 30, 2024, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, reassured the public that the alleged occupation of the military camp by bandits and the displacement of residents from 23 communities in Kontagora and Mariga are both “untrue and utterly misleading.”

“Contrary to the circulating reports, no credible threat exists in the Kontagora and Mariga areas as has been suggested,” the statement read. An investigation conducted by the Army’s intelligence unit revealed that the individuals seen in the area were herders seeking grazing grounds, not armed insurgents. The Army confirmed that there was no evidence of malicious intent or hostile activity associated with the herders’ presence.

While acknowledging the importance of vigilance and Honourable Isah’s commitment to the security of his constituents, the Army urged public officials and citizens to verify any claims of security threats through official channels to avoid unnecessary panic and disruption.

“Such misinformation can lead to unwarranted fear, misdirect resources away from actual security priorities, and worsen the security situation,” Nwachukwu emphasized.

The Nigerian Army reiterated that its training facilities remain fully secured and equipped to address any potential security threats promptly. Additionally, the Army affirmed its ongoing commitment to protecting the lives and property of host communities and Nigerians at large.

The statement serves as an assurance to the public that Niger State’s military areas are secure, and the Nigerian Army remains dedicated to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
