Biden applauds Tinubu over release of Binance executive

U.S. President Joe Biden has appreciated President Bola Tinubu for the cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in law enforcement, leading to the release of Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, who had been detained in Nigeria on money laundering charges.

According to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, President Biden pledged to deepen strategic relations with Nigeria.

Tuggar shared that the commitment came during a phone call Biden made to Tinubu at around 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

During the call, President Tinubu expressed appreciation for the U.S.-Nigeria collaboration across multiple areas and emphasized the importance of ongoing security cooperation, particularly in West Africa.

The partnership, he noted, includes intelligence sharing, advanced technological applications, and both kinetic and non-kinetic training.

Tinubu also assured Biden of Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening the partnership and highlighted Africa’s pivotal role in the global future, underscoring the importance of sustained cooperation.

The leaders additionally addressed the topic of United Nations Security Council reform.

Biden reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to securing two permanent seats for Africa and emphasized that Nigeria’s influential position in the continent qualifies it as a strong candidate for one of these seats.
