A member of the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, has been given N500,000 bail by a Kuje, Abuja, magistrate court following the House of Reps member assault on a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), made news for insulting and physically abusing Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.
In a widely shared video, Ikwechegh was seen getting into a furious argument with the driver, whom he claims is being disrespectful by asking him to come to the car to pick up his delivery.
Social media was enraged by the October 27 event that took place in Abuja’s Maitama neighbourhood.
Ikwechegh was charged with three counts of assault and threat of death in court on Wednesday.
He entered a not-guilty plea to the allegations brought by the Inspector General of Police’s office.
After that, his attorney requested his bail orally.
The application was approved by the magistrate, Abubakar Umar Sai’id, with a bail amount of N500,000 and two sureties of the same amount.
According to him, the sureties must be residents of the court’s jurisdiction and present proof of residency in the form of utility bills.
November 8, 2024 was chosen as the new date for the lawsuit.
