In response to claims of assault on Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya, the House of Representatives has opened an investigation against Abia State’s Aba North and South Federal Constituency legislator, Alex Ikwechegh.
During Tuesday’s plenary session, Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere brought up a “point of privilege,” which prompted the announcement of the investigation into Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
A video that went viral shows Ikwechegh and Abuwatseya having a heated argument on October 27 in the Maitama region of Abuja. Ikwechegh allegedly smacked and ridiculed Abuwatseya for requesting him to come to the car to pick up his parcel.
After the video received a lot of backlash, Ikwechegh was called in for interrogation by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.
The House of Representatives has instructed its Committee on Ethics and Privileges to look into the subject after it was referred.
In the meantime, after a confrontation with a bolt driver at his Maitama, Abuja, home, Ikwechegh has publicly apologised.
Ikwechegh admitted in his statement that his behaviour was improper and went against what was expected of a public officer.
He continued by apologising for the anguish and humiliation Abuwatseya, his supporters, and the general public had endured.
Ikwechegh reaffirmed his support for the Nigerian Police’s inquiry to guarantee accountability.
