Police arrest former lawmaker over alleged kidnap attempt

A former legislative member of the Ndokwa West Local Government Council in Delta State has been detained by the state’s police for allegedly attempting to kidnap a lady in the Abbi community of the state.

In a statement released on Sunday in Asaba, Delta police spokesman Bright Edafe claimed that the former council member was taken into custody after police officers discreetly gathered intelligence.

Florence Onum got a reliable intelligence tip that the former lawmaker was “planning to kidnap a prominent member of Abbi community,” according to Mr. Edafe, Divisional Police Officer, Abbi Division.

According to Mr. Edafe, a superintendent of police, officers used this intelligence report as the basis for a covert inquiry. Around 9 p.m. on October 21, the lawmaker (name withheld) from the Emu-Uno community and one other person were arrested.

“Upon interrogation, the suspect said he was suspended from his councillorship position and that he wanted to kidnap the woman so that the local government would pay a ransom since the woman was close to the council chairman,” Mr Edafe said.

According to the spokesman, the investigation was still underway and the lawmakerremained in police custody.

He cited Olufemi Abaniwonda, the Delta Commissioner of Police, who reiterated the police’s resolve to guarantee that the state’s crime rate is lowered.

Mr. Abaniwonda stated that the command had sent police officers around the state’s 25 local government areas and that the Yuletide was expected to create a rise in crime.

“The command has embarked on an intensive visibility patrol while constant raiding of criminal hideouts and black spots will be intensified

“Members of the public are urged to partner with the police by providing useful, timely, and credible information that will help the police in the fight against crime,” he said.
