Alice Udey, 33, has allegedly been detained by Nigerian police on suspicion of stealing jewels valued at over $60,000 from her employer less than twenty-four hours after she began working as a maid.
After a 16-month investigation, the suspect—who reportedly goes under many false names—was apprehended at the Ikoyi Police Station.
It was found that affluent families are being targeted by suspect and other groups.
AFRIPOST gathered that the arrest comes after a thorough 16-month investigation that revealed a well-planned plot employing domestic staff who enter wealthy houses under false pretences.
Police claim that Udey took her priceless jewels from her employer’s house and vanished the day after her job started.
“This appears to be a calculated operation where individuals pose as domestic staff to infiltrate homes and steal valuables,” a senior police officer said, speaking anonymously.
“We believe Ms. Udey’s actions are part of a wider syndicate operating in high-end neighbourhoods.”
Udey was recently arrested after months of monitoring and intelligence collection, according to investigators at the Ikoyi Police Station.
Nonetheless, more people thought to be a member of the organised criminal network are presently being sought by the authorities.
As they work to destroy the accused network, police are urging locals to report any similar events.
Udey is anticipated to be charged with stealing, and if the investigation progresses, other accusations may be brought against her.
