Abia Lawmaker arrested for alleged assault on cab driver

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command announced on Monday the arrest of a lawmaker, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, for allegedly assaulting a cab driver in Abuja.

The incident was confirmed by Abuja Command spokesperson Josephine Adeh, who stated that Ikwechegh is currently at the Maitama Police Station, where he is undergoing questioning.

According to Adeh, the cab driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, filed a complaint with the Command, reporting that he was assaulted while delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh.

Initial investigations suggest that a disagreement occurred regarding the delivery method, during which Abuwatseya was allegedly physically assaulted.

“The FCT Police Command is deeply concerned by Hon. Ikwechegh’s apparent disregard for the authority of the Inspector General of Police. After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly stated, ‘You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,’” the police spokesperson said.

Following the incident, FCT Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered a comprehensive investigation.

“The Command is dedicated to an impartial investigation and will pursue appropriate legal action once inquiries are complete,” the statement added.
