8 days blackout in Northern Nigeria generates fresh nationwide tension

Northern Nigeria has experienced a prolonged blackout lasting eight days, leading to widespread frustration and escalating tension across the country especially in the Northern region.

The extended power outage has disrupted daily life for millions, with citizens voicing growing concerns over the impact on businesses, health services, and overall quality of life.

The blackout, which began in the middle of October, has affected numerous states across the northern region especially Northwest states with many residents and business owners citing substantial financial losses and operational challenges.

Healthcare facilities are particularly impacted, with some forced to rely on the expensive petrol generators to maintain critical services.

Transmission company of Nigeria (TCN) and Nigerian authorities have yet to provide a concrete timeline for when power will be restored, intensifying dissatisfaction among the public. Social media has become a platform for citizens to voice their grievances, with hashtags trending nationwide, reflecting the widespread discontent.

The situation has reignited conversations on Nigeria’s longstanding energy challenges and the need for infrastructural improvements to avoid future disruptions.

Government representatives have assured citizens that they are working to address the issue, while stating that the setback to address the blackout is due to the activities of bandits and insecurity in the area where the electricity is affected.

As pressure mounts, citizens and advocacy groups are calling for urgent reforms to stabilize the country’s power supply and ensure reliable access to electricity for all regions.

Below are some of Nigerians tweets on the X (Twitter) platform voicing out their frustration as total blackout in Northern Nigeria enters the 8th day:

@DrMooh tweeted, “This country hasn’t solved any major problem since its inception. Not electricity. Not public water system. Not proper sewage system. Not primary health care system. Just crass looting and cosplaying.”

@Sizzle wrote, “No Electricity in the whole of Northern Nigeria for the last 2 weeks but all that their Reps were discussing was Adopting Shariah for the whole Country.”

“Day 9 of living in total darkness in Northern Nigeria. No water. No electricity Congratulations to everyone who voted for this Muslim-Muslim ticket — I hope you’re enjoying the fruits of your labor”, tweeted Sarki.

“There’s been no electricity in nearly the entire North for close to 10 days now, TOTAL BLACKOUT! yet it’s sharia law that is their priority. When 2027 comes, they’ll still line up to collect spaghetti and rice, only to face even more severe pain. Unserious people”, KingSuleiman27 wrote.

@Aisha Yesufu wrote, “Has this lack of electricity issue shown that Abuja is not part of Northern States? Thinking out loud.

“When they want the numbers to fight their selfish agenda they use everything to get the masses on fight they know nothing about but when it is time to fight for the masses they are nowhere to be found.”
