Court clears KANSIEC to proceed with LG elections

Must read

On Friday, Justice Sunusi Ado Ma’aji of the Kano High Court issued a ruling allowing the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) to conduct its previously scheduled Local Government elections on Saturday.

This decision came just a day after Justice Simon Amobeda had issued an injunction blocking KANSIEC from proceeding, citing concerns that executive members of the commission were card-carrying members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Justice Ma’aji’s ruling, however, reversed the ban, authorizing KANSIEC to move forward with the election. Many observers have welcomed this development as a positive step for democracy in the state.

The lead-up to the election has seen numerous legal battles, particularly from the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has sought to prevent the vote from taking place.

In a Friday evening statement, Lawan Badamasi, Commissioner for Media at KANSIEC, speaking on behalf of the Commission’s Chairman, Prof. Sani Lawal Malumfashi, confirmed that accredited parties for the election include AA, AAC, Accord Party, ADC, APM, and NNPP.
