Must read

Nigerian players Ademola Lookman and William Troost-Ekong are among the esteemed nominees on the Confederation of African Football’s eagerly awaited shortlist for the 2024 Men’s Player of the Year award.

The current champion Victor Osimhen and in-form attacker Victor Boniface, however, were conspicuously missing from the final selection, according to a tweet made by CAF on Thursday on X (previously Twitter).

With Algeria’s Amine Gouiri and Morocco’s defensive mainstays Achraf Hakimi and Sofiane Rahimi on the shortlist of 10, North Africa is well represented.

Simon Adingra of Ivory Coast also makes an appearance after a fantastic club season, and Serhou Guirassy of Guinea and Chancel Mbemba of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have earned their spots after putting up strong displays all year long.

The list is completed by Ronwen Williams of South Africa and Edmond Tapsoba of Burkina Faso, demonstrating the diversity of skill on the African continent.

The candidates, who represent many elite leagues in Africa and Europe, emphasise how African football is becoming more and more influential worldwide.

This year’s pick combines well-known football players with up-and-coming talent, all of whom were honoured for their outstanding performances and dependability in 2024.

Osimhen’s successor as Africa’s best player will be decided by the CAF Awards 2024, which will honour the best football players in the continent.
