Police ban covered number plates, unregistered vehicles in Kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has announced a ban on the use of vehicles with covered number plates and unregistered vehicles and motorcycles within the state.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, Williams Ovye-Aya, the state Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Onuoha, warned that motorists found violating this directive would face arrest and prosecution.

The commissioner explained that the decision was prompted by intelligence reports indicating that criminals have been using vehicles with covered number plates and unregistered vehicles to commit crimes, posing a serious security threat in the state.

“This practice has led to a rise in criminal activities, created an atmosphere of lawlessness, and provided cover for perpetrators. It has also hampered efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat crime. As such, vehicle owners are advised to remove covered number plates and ensure proper registration, or risk having their vehicles impounded,” Mr. Onuoha stated.

He further emphasized that it is illegal for drivers to obscure their number plates or drive without vehicle registration, urging the public to comply with the directive before enforcement begins.

The police commissioner encouraged vehicle owners to register their vehicles, remove any covers from number plates, and replace defaced ones in order to avoid legal repercussions.
