I’ve never assaulted my wife, farmer tells court

Must read

Farmer, Yusuf Kankomi, on Tuesday refuted allegations of assaulting his wife during a hearing at a Shari’a court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna. Kankomi firmly stated that he had never laid a hand on his wife, Ms Abdullahi.

He also emphasized that he consistently provided food for her and even shared the surplus with the less-privileged as alms. Kankomi further added that he treated his wife’s parents with utmost respect, considering them as his own.

“I hold her parents in high regard, and out of respect, I don’t even address her mother by her name,” he told the court.

Ms Abdullahi had previously filed a complaint accusing her husband of assault, neglect, and disrespecting her parents. She requested that the court dissolve their marriage, stating that she could no longer tolerate living with an abuser.

The judge, Anas Khalifa, asked Ms Abdullahi if she had witnesses to support her claims, to which she responded affirmatively. The case was adjourned to October 29 for further hearing.
