CAF fixes date to decide on Libya vs Nigeria case

Must read

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will make a decision on Wednesday about the postponed Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification match between Libya and Nigeria.

AFRIPOST reports that the match was planned for October 15 at Benina Martyrs Stadium.

According to Libya’s Al-Ahrar Channel, CAF will announce its final decision on the circumstances surrounding the Super Eagles’ 1-0 victory in the first leg in Nigeria, as well as the cancelled return match at Libya’s 10,550-capacity, all-seater stadium.

According to the report, the Libyan Football Federation has filed all required documentation to CAF, and their case is being overseen by a specialised lawyer.

Following the fixture’s cancellation, CAF sent the subject to its Disciplinary Committee for consideration and took the game off its schedule the following day.

The Libyan Football Federation denounced the Nigerian team’s decision to skip the game in a statement on Monday, vowing to take all necessary legal action to safeguard their national team’s interests.

On Sunday, October 14, the Nigerian team landed in Libya; however, their aircraft was rerouted to Al Abraq International Airport, which is three hours away from the Benghazi stadium. The Nigerian squad was in a distraught state after being held by Libyan police for 17 hours before they were allowed to travel home.

Nigeria later complained to the CAF over their treatment, and the Libyan Football Federation blamed Nigeria for not cooperating in both legs of the match, downplaying Nigeria’s experience in comparison to their misery in Nigeria for the first leg.

CAF acknowledged that it had contacted both Nigerian and Libyan authorities, calling the position the Nigerian squad was in Libya “extremely dangerous.”

The disciplinary committee of CAF has now been tasked with investigating the situation and deciding whether penalties are necessary for any violations of the rules of the game.
