According to the Lagos State Police Command, all protesters who were detained during the #EndSars observance at the Lekki Toll Gate in the early hours of Sunday have been freed.
According to a tweet on his X account, Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesman for the Command, verified this, saying that CP Olanrewaju Ishola, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, personally oversaw the procedure.
“All protesters in our custody have been released. CP Olanrewaju Ishola was on the ground at the SCID to personally ensure this,” Hundeyin wrote.
Inibehe Effiong, a human rights attorney, also attested to the release of everyone detained by the police at the Lekki Toll Gate.
Effiong also verified that all of the objects taken from the protesters were given back to them in a post on his X account.
In honour of the fourth anniversary of the Lekki massacre, the attorney stated, “We have secured the release of all 22 activists who were arrested this morning at the Lekki Toll Gate.”
“We had a discussion with the Commissioner of Police who came over to the State CID in respect of the matter. The items seized from the protesters were also returned to them.”
The protesters were taken into custody as they gathered to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the shooting at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020, which claimed the lives of nonviolent protesters during the EndSARS protests against police brutality.
With several banners and placards, the young people reportedly assembled outside the toll gate at about 8:30 a.m.
They insisted that the recommendations from the many judicial panels of inquiry established during the 2020 demonstrations be fully implemented.
