The Nigeria Police Force has expressed deep concern over the rising incidents of jungle justice in various regions of the country, warning of its negative impact on the criminal justice system, the rule of law, and Nigeria’s international standing.
In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, the force’s public relations officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, condemned the phenomenon, labeling it “a deplorable and savage behavior.”
Mr. Adejobi highlighted that such actions have resulted in tragic loss of life and property destruction nationwide. He emphasized that jungle justice represents a betrayal of due process, undermining the rule of law and the fundamental principles of human rights and justice.
Also, the police spokesperson denounced acts of arson occurring in various areas, noting instances where suspects in police custody were killed by fire, alongside attacks on police barracks, patrol vehicles, and a Divisional Police Station in Edo State.
In a specific case, a primary suspect was apprehended after nearly being lynched by community members. His arrest led to the apprehension of three additional suspects.
However, the community’s perception that the police would compromise justice resulted in a violent backlash, with a large mob attacking the police station, killing the suspects, and destroying property.
Mr. Adejobi refuted the community’s erroneous belief that the police intended to free the suspects, stating that thorough investigations had indeed led to the identification of three more individuals involved in the crime.
In another incident, a police unit attempting to prevent jungle justice faced a violent confrontation in the Agege area of Lagos State on October 19.
During this altercation, ASP Augustine Osupayi was tragically killed while rescuing a driver accused of accidentally injuring a motorcycle rider.
Mr. Adejobi reported that the mob reacted violently against the police team, resulting in the officer’s death.
“These incidents are just a few examples of the numerous occurrences being reported across the country,” he added.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has extended condolences to the families of the deceased and has instructed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to conduct a thorough investigation into these events to ensure that those responsible face justice.
