Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has publicly declared his support for the state’s current governor, Biodun Oyebanji, in his bid for a second term, despite potential repercussions from his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Fayose made this statement over the weekend in Ado-Ekiti during the commissioning of the De-Head/Faglo Road and electrification project, which connects several suburban areas, including Irewumi, Orungbe, Olorunsogo, Surelere, Olorunda, and Ijadu, and was completed by the Oyebanji administration.
He expressed admiration for how Oyebanji has continued and completed projects initiated by previous governors, noting that this reflects a unity of purpose among Ekiti leaders.
Regarding the 2026 governorship election, Fayose revealed that all former governors of the state have endorsed Oyebanji for a second term and are committed to supporting his candidacy.
Ignoring the potential backlash for his support of Oyebanji, Fayose stated, “I don’t care what people say about me. I am with you, and whoever is not pleased should take their party away. The people are speaking for the governor; they love him and want him back, and I can’t be against my people.
“I see you leaving a legacy that will outlive you. All of us former governors will adopt Oyebanji for a second term because he has done well.”
In his remarks, Governor Oyebanji highlighted that he has connected over 40 towns to the national grid since taking office two years ago, aiming to enhance the local economy and modernize grassroots infrastructure.
The governor mentioned that he chose to construct the road with solar lighting to boost nighttime activity and spur economic development in the area. He emphasized that integrating electricity along new roads is part of his standard practice.
“This road was initiated by Governor Ayodele Fayose, but I completed it. It’s essential for leaders to perform while in office. By my assessment, all our past governors have done well and deserve our respect,” Oyebanji said.
He assured the public that local government chairmen would receive full support from his administration to deliver quality projects at the grassroots level.
“Electricity and roads are fundamental to development, and we will continue to connect as many towns as possible with these essential services. Any town without good roads and electricity will remain in darkness, and no development can occur.
“I will not neglect any sector or community. All of us must enjoy the dividends of democracy because every vote carries equal value. I will continue to serve you as your servant,” he concluded.
