Two towers along the vital 330kV Shiroro-Kaduna transmission lines 1 and 2 have been demolished by vandals, leaving portions of Kano and Kaduna without power.
According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the towers T133 and T136 sustained significant damage yesterday, which caused the delivery of power to be disrupted in several areas of the North-West.
The TCN mobilised local vigilante groups for additional patrols in the concerned region when the first transmission line went off, followed not long after by the second.
The wires (cables) were discovered to be seriously degraded in many locations, according to TCN’s Shiroro Regional Office.
“Investigations revealed that this is not a case of routine damage but a deliberate act of vandalism.
“We are working closely with security operatives to secure the area, which has been identified as vulnerable to banditry, posing risks to our infrastructure and personnel,” said TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah.
To stabilise the situation in response to the emergency, the TCN has brought a recently purchased emergency restoration system to the location.
