Tragedy struck on Saturday morning in the Agege area of Lagos, where a 46-year-old Assistant Superintendent of Police lost his life in a confrontation involving commercial motorcyclists, known locally as Okada riders.
According to reports, the ASP and his team had responded to an accident scene near WEMCO Junction when tensions escalated.
The officers were met with hostility while attempting to tow away a truck that had reportedly hit an Okada rider.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the motorcyclists resisted the police’s actions, demanding that the truck be set on fire.
Confirming the unfortunate event, Lagos State Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, described the attack as unprovoked.
Hundeyin revealed that the police had received a distress call around 1:40 a.m., informing them of an accident involving a trailer and an Okada rider in Agege.
“When the police team arrived, they encountered a large crowd of Okada riders. As they tried to move the truck, the riders launched an attack, insisting on torching the vehicle. Sadly, the ASP, aged 46, was struck on the head and died at the scene, while the truck driver managed to escape,” Hundeyin said.
Authorities have since arrested five individuals in connection with the incident, and a search is underway for more suspects.
