Three dismissed police officers from the Kwara State Command have been charged in connection with the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.
The officers—Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Samuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip—are facing two charges: criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.
The charges follow an investigation into the death of 21-year-old Ishola, a National Diploma 2 student in Electrical/Electronics, who was allegedly killed during a protest by students in Ilorin over a fuel hike.
The incident led to widespread outrage and the case was subsequently transferred to the police headquarters in Abuja following an order from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
In a statement released by the police, it was revealed that the dismissed officers were found guilty of neglecting their duties, engaging in corrupt practices, and exercising their authority unlawfully during the incident.
After a thorough investigation and internal disciplinary proceedings, they were dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force on October 4, 2024.
The police reaffirmed the commitment of the Inspector General to ensuring accountability and professionalism within the force.
“Under IGP Egbetokun’s leadership, any breach of ethical standards, particularly those resulting in loss of life, will be met with stringent consequences,” the statement emphasized.
The police also extended their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, expressing solidarity during this difficult time while pledging support.
