Professor Iliyasu Usman has become the first Igbo Muslim to be selected as an imam at the Abuja National Mosque by its administration.
On Friday, today, at Jumm’at prayer, Usman delivered his first khutbah (sermon), which served as a momentous occasion for the Muslim community in Nigeria.
Many people have praised this appointment, particularly the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON), which sees it as evidence of Usman’s dedication to Islamic leadership and study.
In a statement, SEMON commended the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs’ (NSCIA) inclusivity, which is led by Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General.
In addition to being a significant personal achievement for Usman, SEMON underlined that this appointment is a divine obligation to guide the Muslim community in devotion and service to Allah.
The group said it hoped his leadership would strengthen the Igbo Muslim community and promote harmony among Nigeria’s Muslim community as a whole.
