Emefiele: Court grants EFCC’s request to present witness virtually

Must read

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been asked by Justice Mary Anenih of a Federal Capital Territory High Court to virtually present two witnesses in the trial of Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank.

The EFCC requested permission from the court to use a video link to call the witnesses, who are now overseas, and Justice Anenih approved their request in a decision on Friday.

Emefiele is facing six charges from the EFCC, including illegally producing fresh naira notes.

The two witnesses the prosecution intended to call next were situated in the United States of America, the EFCC’s counsel informed the court during the day’s proceedings.

He told the court that his team had trouble getting the witnesses to Nigeria and that they wanted to submit a request to have the witnesses’ oral testimony recorded via Zoom or another video platform.

Although the defence attorney did not object to the prosecution’s application, he did want to know if the witnesses would be the last people the prosecution called.

Justice MaryAnne Anenih approved the prosecution’s plea and postponed the trial to November 14, 26, December 4, 2024, and January 21, 2025 after hearing arguments from the parties.
