Police hunt for three suspects in connection with 2020 anti-government protest

The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has launched a manhunt for three individuals allegedly involved in a 2020 protest described as anti-government.

The suspects, identified as Thankgod Chibundu, Arinze Chukwuma, and others, are accused of participating in the demonstration that escalated into violent confrontations with police officers deployed to maintain order.

The protest took place on January 20, 2020, at Cele Ijesha in Lagos State, and was reportedly organized to oppose government policies.

Despite its initial peaceful nature, tensions flared, leading to clashes between the protesters and law enforcement officers.

According to police sources, the suspects are wanted for their alleged roles in inciting violence, resisting arrest, damaging property, and obstructing public order.

The police stated that the trio and other unidentified participants ignored multiple warnings to disperse, and the demonstration eventually became unlawful.

A police spokesperson explained that the actions of the group, which included traffic blockades and altercations with officers, resulted in significant disruption. “Thankgod Chibundu, Arinze Chukwuma, and their associates are responsible for much of the unrest that occurred, and they will be held accountable,” the spokesperson added. The police are seeking assistance from the public in locating the suspects, assuring that all information provided will be treated confidentially.

Authorities have voiced concerns over the increasing frequency of protests and emphasized the importance of maintaining public order. They urged citizens to express their grievances through legal and peaceful means.

The public remains divided on the events surrounding the protest and the subsequent manhunt. While protest organizers argue that participants were exercising their rights to free speech and assembly, some residents have expressed concern over the violent turn the protest took.

Legal experts have also weighed in, with some questioning whether the charges brought against the suspects align with constitutional protections for peaceful assembly.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement is intensifying efforts to apprehend the suspects, with officials suggesting that they may be hiding in remote locations within the country. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for how future protests are managed by both the authorities and civil activists.
