Following extortion allegations made public in a widely shared video, four officers from the Nigerian Police Force’s Imo State Command are undergoing an orderly room trial.
After Young C Entertainment posted the footage of the police’ alleged wrongdoing online, Inspector Ibrahim Nainna, Unaka Maxvirgin, Inspector Miller Ibinitta, and Sergeant Antony Alozie were placed under arrest.
In a statement released on Thursday, state police command spokesperson Henry Okoye stated that the trial’s purpose is to look into Young C Entertainment’s allegations and bring charges against any policemen found guilty.
A physical evaluation of the circumstances of detainees being detained in police cells under the command has also been initiated by CP Aboki Danjuma, the state police commissioner.
Okoye stated, “The Commissioner of Police in Imo state, CP Aboki Danjuma, and his management team are actively conducting inspections across various police divisions and tactical teams.
“This initiative aims to assess the conditions of suspects in detention and ensure that no individual is held beyond the legal limits. This move reflects a commitment to upholding the rights of detainees and improving overall police accountability.”
The state criminal investigation department’s (CID) anti-narcotics section was accused on social media by Young C Entertainment, a male online content promotion, of abuse, extortion, unlawful arrest, confinement, and abandonment.
He claims that while going to film a film, the four police officers pulled over and took them into custody, even though they insisted that the counterfeit money they were carrying was for the film’s production, as stated on the documents.
He further said that they were kept in cell 12 with other prisoners, the circumstances of which caused one of them to have an asthma attack.
Numerous people in cell 12 were deprived of food, family contact, and medical care, which resulted in their malnutrition and agony, according to Young C Entertainment.
Somto Okonkwo described the incident in a 13-minute, 52-second video, saying that police stopped them on their way to the MTN office in order to retrieve a misplaced SIM card. The cops allegedly sought a N1.5 million payment, claiming they were carrying fake US dollars used as props for films, even though he claimed to be a journalist and member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).
