Bill to create new state scales second reading at house of reps

Must read

The House of Representatives has cleared a second reading of a bill that would establish a new state in the south-south geopolitical zone.

During Thursday’s plenary, the proposed legislation—co-sponsored by Godwin Offiono of Cross River and three other lawmakers—scaled second reading.

The 1999 constitution would be changed by the parliamentarians to establish Ogoja state from Cross River.

Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas submitted the bill to a voice vote, and it was approved.

The measure was sent to the constitutional review committee by the presiding officer.

This contributes to the numerous measures that aim to establish additional states in the nation.
