At least 90 individuals have been confirmed dead following a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya, Taura Local Government Area (LGA) of Jigawa State on Tuesday night.
Shi’isu Adam, the Jigawa State Police spokesperson, confirmed the fatalities in an interview on Wednesday. He also revealed that 50 others sustained various injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The explosion occurred at around 11:30 p.m. when the tanker driver lost control near Khadija University. The driver had departed Kano and was en route to Nguru in Yobe State when the accident took place.
Adam expressed concern over the public’s disregard for safety warnings, as people had gathered around the accident site, which contributed to the high number of casualties.
A mass burial for the victims is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, while the injured continue to receive care at Ringim General Hospital.
