Israel strikes Beirut, rejects ceasefire as tensions in Middle East further escalate

Must read

Israel said it hit a Hezbollah weapons site in Beirut on Wednesday after rejecting any ‘unilateral’ cease-fire arrangement.

Israel’s airstrike on the southern Lebanese village of Nabatiyeh killed five civilians, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. According to sources who spoke with Reuters and AFP, the town’s mayor was among those slain.

“The Israeli enemy raid… on two buildings, that of the Nabatieh municipality and the union of municipalities, killed five people in a preliminary toll,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that rescuers were looking for survivors beneath the wreckage.

Israel’s army also targeted nearby areas, such as Zebdine and Kfar Tebnit.

The mayor of Nabatiyeh is said to be among those dead.

“The mayor of Nabatieh, among others … was martyred. It’s a massacre,” Nabatiyeh municipal governor Howaida Turk told AFP, adding the mayor had been in the building at the time of the strike.
