The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, has instructed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to investigate the petrol tanker explosion that occurred in Jigawa State.The explosion took place in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area, on Tuesday night, leading to the tragic loss of over 100 lives and leaving many others injured.
In a statement released on Wednesday by his special adviser on media and communications, Nneamaka Okafor, the minister expressed deep sorrow over the devastating incident. He stressed the need for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion.
Lokpobiri called on petroleum transporters to strictly ensure that only drivers certified by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and compliant with safety regulations are tasked with transporting petroleum products. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives in the distribution and transport of petroleum products, pledging to work with stakeholders to strengthen safety protocols and prevent future incidents.
The minister also urged the public to avoid approaching petrol tankers involved in accidents or breakdowns, highlighting the grave dangers associated with attempting to collect spilled fuel.
“While we understand the temptation, the risks of collecting spilled fuel are too great to ignore. The loss of lives in this incident is a tragic reminder of the severe consequences,” Lokpobiri stated.
He extended his condolences on behalf of the federal government and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to the families of the victims, wishing the injured a swift recovery.
