FCT residents fumes, decry frequent national grid collapses, call for lasting solution

Electricity consumers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have expressed frustration over the frequent collapses of the national power grid, calling it a national embarrassment.

The latest grid failure, which occurred on Monday, plunged the country into darkness, marking the sixth collapse in 2024.

Although power was restored to some parts of the country on Tuesday, residents of areas such as Kubwa, Lugbe, and Kuje urged the federal government to address the ongoing issue.

Eniola Oluseyi, a Kubwa resident, described the frequent power grid failures as an embarrassment to the nation and urged the government to find a permanent solution.

“Every time we experience a blackout or grid collapse, it is embarrassing for the consumers. The government must take action to prevent future occurrences,” she said.

Similarly, Chibuzor Okoye, a resident of Lugbe, expressed concern about the repeated grid failures, saying, “Each time we hear of a grid collapse, it reflects poorly on the country.

The government needs to implement the right measures to stop this from happening.”

Priscilla Akpan, also from Lugbe, criticized the lack of improvement in the power sector despite significant investments.

“It’s unacceptable for the grid to fail so often. A lot of money has been spent on the power sector, yet we see no progress,” she said.

Usman Aliyu, a Kuje resident, echoed these sentiments, questioning why the grid continues to collapse despite the large funds allocated to the sector.

He called on those responsible to identify the cause and take action.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed that the grid collapsed at about 6:58 p.m. on Monday, but did not provide a specific reason.

They assured consumers that efforts were underway to restore power as soon as the grid stabilizes.
