JUST IN: Libyan Football Federation responds to Super Eagles flight diversion controversy

Must read

Concerns over the recent flight change for the Nigerian national team prior to their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Libya have been addressed by the Libyan Football Federation (Libyan FF).

In a formal statement, the Federation vehemently refuted any wrongdoing or deliberate mismanagement of the issue while expressing remorse for any difficulty caused.

“Such incidents can occur due to routine air traffic control protocols, security checks, or logistical challenges,” the Libyan FF stated, adding that these are “standard procedures at airports worldwide.”

The Federation informed the public that the detour was unintentional and reiterated its support for Nigeria’s squad.

They also denied any claims of sabotage by football or security authorities in Libya.

The statement also mentioned the difficulties Libya’s national team encountered when travelling to Nigeria for the third Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

“Football unites nations, and we are committed to upholding fairness and mutual respect,” the statement added.

Libya highlighted how its culture values hospitality and treating all visiting teams with respect and decency.

The Federation stressed the value of friendship, solidarity, and sportsmanship in football while urging understanding and kindness in its closing remarks.

The announcement was made amid increased anxiety when it was reported that Nigeria’s Super Eagles had been stuck at the Al Abraq Airport for more than 12 hours before the highly anticipated AFCON qualifier.
