Ekiti Govt disburses N3.5bn to pensioners, implements N70,000 minimum wage

Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has announced that civil servants in the state will now receive a new minimum wage of N70,000, with corresponding pension adjustments for retirees.

Recall the Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State had yesterday announced the implementation of N73,000 minimum wage for workers in the state.

However, Oyebanji made the announcement on Saturday during the 2024 Pensioners’ Day event in Ado Ekiti, which also marks the start of celebrations for the second anniversary of his administration.

Governor Oyebanji emphasized his commitment to improving the welfare of citizens, stating, “The minimum wage is now a binding law across all states.”

At the event, he also handed out cheques totaling N3.5 billion to 829 retirees who left the service between 2014 and March 2015.

He further outlined initiatives aimed at supporting senior citizens, including a free health insurance scheme for pensioners.

The governor noted that over N70 billion has been allocated for gratuity payments, urging retirees to continue praying for the success of his administration.

Kolapo Olatunji, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), praised Governor Oyebanji’s administration for offering relief and hope to pensioners.

Similarly, the state’s head of service, Folakemi Olomojobi, expressed gratitude to the retirees for their continued support.

The national chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), represented by Ayo Ikumapayi, and the state chairman, Joel Akinola, also commended the governor’s efforts, pledging their ongoing support for his administration.
