Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed the Senate’s full support for the Supreme Court’s ruling that grants financial autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local governments.
Akpabio made this statement following the Senate’s closed session, which discussed a motion sponsored by Senator Tony Nwoye (LP-Anambra). Nwoye’s motion raised concerns about attempts by some state governments, through their Houses of Assembly, to pass laws undermining the Supreme Court’s decision on local government financial autonomy.
“We stand solidly behind the Supreme Court’s judgement and pronouncement on local government autonomy,” Akpabio stated. He noted that the Senate carefully reviewed Nwoye’s motion and, while some aspects conflicted with existing constitutional provisions, two key recommendations were agreed upon.
Akpabio emphasized that the Senate and the 10th National Assembly are committed to ensuring that local government funds are effectively used for the benefit of rural communities. He highlighted the importance of leaving a legacy of accountability and proper management of local government resources.
Following deliberations, the Senate adopted two of the six recommendations from Nwoye’s motion. They urged all state and local governments to fully comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling on the disbursement and use of funds for local governments. Additionally, the Senate pledged to amend relevant sections of the constitution to ensure full autonomy for local governments in Nigeria.
Akpabio thanked the lawmakers for their input and particularly commended Senator Tony Nwoye for bringing attention to the matter. He assured that the National Assembly would make necessary constitutional changes to secure full autonomy for local government administration.
“The National Assembly will amend any aspect of our constitution or laws needed to ensure full autonomy for local governments in Nigeria,” Akpabio concluded.
