The Edo State Police Command has arrested several individuals found in possession of illegal firearms as part of its ongoing efforts to combat crime in the state.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Benin City, the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Yamu, revealed that officers from the Ehor Divisional Police Station apprehended a suspect on October 5 in Irue Community with a Beretta pistol.

In a separate operation on October 6, the police raided an initiation ceremony of the Eiye Confraternity in Egbeiri community, Benin City, where two suspects were arrested. During the raid, law enforcement officers confiscated a locally made revolver and two single-barrel shotguns.

“The suspects have confessed to the crime and will be arraigned in court shortly,” Yamu stated.

He further conveyed the reassurance of the Commissioner of Police, Nemi Iwo, who emphasized the command’s dedication to reducing crime in Edo State. Iwo reiterated the ongoing ban by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on the activities of non-state actors, stressing that the command will not tolerate the illegal possession of firearms by any individual or group under any pretense.
