HOD suspended for alleged alterations of examination scores

The University of Calabar (UniCal) has suspended Joseph Akpan, a lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology, following allegations of misconduct.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Florence Obi announced the suspension on Wednesday in Calabar, stating that Akpan is accused of manipulating 235 examination result scripts while serving as the Head of Department (HOD).

According to Prof. Obi, Akpan allegedly altered students’ scores for the Introduction to General Antimicrobial Pharmacology (PHM 311) course.

Out of 242 result scripts entrusted to him, he is said to have made changes to 235, while only five scripts were genuinely marked without alterations.

The Vice-Chancellor also reported that Akpan is alleged to have awarded marks to two students who did not take the examinations.

She noted that he confessed to the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC) that he inflated scores to protect the department’s reputation, a justification that management deemed unacceptable.

As a result, the university has decided to relieve Akpan of his duties as HOD and Coordinator of PHM 311, and he has been suspended from duty effective October 8, 2024.

His responsibilities will be reassigned to other qualified lecturers within the department.

Also, Akpan has been instructed to refrain from entering the university premises unless responding to inquiries from relevant committees.
