Boat mishap: Ferry manager nabbed over alleged negligence

Must read

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has confirmed the arrest of a ferry manager following a capsizing incident that occurred in Lagos on Monday. The manager is accused of negligence and failing to comply with safety regulations.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Mrs. Sarat Braimah, the Lagos Area Manager for NIWA, explained that the arrest resulted from a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, conducted by NIWA.

“The intent of this arrest is to promote accountability and create a precedent for strict adherence to waterways regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future,” Braimah remarked. She added that further legal proceedings are expected as the investigation progresses.

Braimah highlighted that the ferry manager is expected to present the captain of the boat. Initial investigations revealed that the fiber boat veered off its designated path and collided with a wooden vessel, primarily due to the captain’s obstructed view, worsened by the boat’s cargo.

She pointed out that the ferry, operated by Only God Ferry, failed to adhere to essential safety standards and navigation procedures.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the accident took place in Imore, Lagos State. As of now, two passengers remain missing, five have been rescued with injuries, and several others escaped without harm.
