Escalating violence in Rivers leaves corpses at council offices

Rivers State is engulfed in escalating violence, with reports of corpses found at local government offices in Ikwerre and Ahoada East LGAs.

The unrest, which initially started as protests against the recent local government elections, has taken a violent turn as armed groups engage in deadly clashes near the council secretariats. Online videos reveal disturbing scenes of bodies scattered around the offices, following the rejection of newly installed council chairmen by supporters of former Governor Nyesom Wike.

The factions continue to dispute the results of the local government elections overseen by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), intensifying tensions in the state.

While authorities have yet to confirm an official death toll, reports of gunfire in multiple locations suggest the violence is spreading. The Rivers State Police Command has not yet issued a formal statement, following the withdrawal of security forces from the council offices under the directive of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
