The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has clarified that the implementation of the new N77,000 allowance for corps members has been delayed due to funding constraints.
In July 2024, the Federal Government approved an increase in the monthly allowance for corps members from N33,000 to N77,000. This increment was officially confirmed by a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by the commission’s Chairman, Ekpo Nta.
Despite this, corps members did not receive the new allowance in September, as expected. Speaking to the BBC Hausa Service, Brigadier General Ahmed explained that the funds necessary for the implementation have yet to be released by the government.
He also noted that NYSC staff had their salaries increased several months ago, but the raise has not been implemented either. “The salaries of NYSC staff were increased about four to five months ago, but the implementation has not yet taken place. We remain hopeful that the new pay will be implemented soon, though the funds are yet to be released,” Ahmed stated.
Regarding the payment timeline, the NYSC DG added that while there is no specific date for the payment of the new allowance, they have been assured that the monthly allowance was officially increased from July 29, 2024.
